The East Yorkshire NHS Hospitals Trust lies at Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham.

Castle Hill Hospital is designated as one of two major acute hospitals providing services to the residents of East Yorkshire and further afield. The development of the hospital into a comprehensive general hospital is projected to be achieved by the year 2000. Phase 3 (Maternity and Gynaecology unit) of the capital development programme was completed in early 1997. Further developments, Phases 4 and 5 are planned.
Set in attractively landscaped grounds, Castle Hill was originally an isolation and TB hospital with a range of single, two and three-storey blocks scattered across the site to reduce the risks of infection. Much of the old accommodation has been replaced with modem purpose-built blocks to cater for the latest advances in medicine.
Castle Hill Hospital has an outstanding reputation as a hospital for patients suffering from chest diseases, with a number of technologically advanced items of equipment in its Pulmonary Function Laboratory. Castle Hill Hospital has developed as an important Cardio-Thoracic Sur-ical Centre, opened in 1988, to serve the eastern half of the Yorkshire Region. This service attracts patients from throughout northern England.
1990 saw the completion of the first phase of the development programme with a new f:5 million Surgical Development bringing four new operating theatres, four wards and an Anaesthetic Department to the hospital. New residences and an Education Centre (now the department of Academic Surgery) were also opened in 1990.
In 1991 a 10 bed Intensive Care Unit and associated laboratory was opened giving Castle Hill Hospital one of the most modem intensive care facilities in the country.
In 1992 a new Day Surgery Unit was opened, cardiology services were established with the appointment of a Consultant Cardiologist and a new catering and dining complex was opened.
In 1993 the out-patients department was refurbished and extended to cope with the increasing number of out-patient attendances at the hospital. A Consultant in GenitoUrinary Medicine was appointed to establish a new service. A comprehensive Gastroenterology service was also introduced with the appointment of a Consultant. John Monson, Professor of Surgery, was appointed to set up a new Academic Department of Surgery as part of the development of academic medicine across North Humberside and the establishment of a School of Medicine with the University of Hull. The Hospital is pioneering laparoscopic surgery on a range of surgical cases.
In 1994 a new ECG department and a medical physics department were opened. A range of non clinical 'quality' initiatives eg, new external signposting, better carparking were introduced. The first demolition of redundant buildings took place to make way for the new capital phases.
In 1995 a new Catheterisation Laboratory and an admissions ward opened. The medical/elderly services have moved from an age related to needs based service. Building of the Maternity Unit commenced.
In January 1997 Phase 3 was completed and the transfer of maternity, special care baby unit and gynaecology services to the new accommodation on the Castle Hill Hospital site took place in April.
A PFI scheme in partnership with Housemar-tin Housing Association has provided an additional 20 units of accommodation for junior medical staff.
A full PFI business case for Phase 4 (Urology and Breast Screening) has been submitted for completion in 1998.
Proposals for a PFI Scheme (Phase 5) for a major capital development to reprovide Outpatient and Radiology services on the Castle Hill site are progressing.
