The Hull Royal Infirmary (HRI) ICU is a 10 bedded general ICU (currently staffing 8 beds). It admits critically ill patients from all specialities except cardiac and burns. The ICU manages both paediatric and neurosurgical patients and there is also a separate 5 bedded neurosurgical ICU/HDU which is imminently due for expansion and relocation. Trainees will also gain experience in cardiac ICU whilst on the cardiac block at Castle Hill Hospital. Rotating trainees will have the opportunity to work in both Grimsby and Scunthorpe ICU's.
The majority of ICU training takes place in the Hull Royal Infirmary unit. It is covered 24 hours a day by 7 consultants who perform daily business and teaching ward rounds and provide a high level of supervision and teaching for trainees in ICU.

ICU training nationally is currently in the early stages of redevelopment and formalisation, guided by the Intercollegiate Board for Training in Intensive Care Medicine. We are committed to develop ICU training in the East Coast School as this develops nationally - my interpretation of the developments and plans so far are attached - for further information in the Yorkshire Region contact Dr Andrew Bodenham at the Leeds General Infirmary ICU.
