Anaesthesia for Orthopaedic Surgery

The anaesthetic department provides anaesthesia for orthopaedic surgery at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital.

1. Hull Royal Infirmary

The department provides consultant, staff grade and trainee cover for trauma surgery. There are trauma lists throughout the day and evening, with emergency cover during the night and at weekends. Elective paediatric orthopaedic surgery is also undertaken at HRI.

2. Castle Hill Hospital

Adult elective orthopaedic surgery is carried out here. A full range of orthopaedic subspecialties are represented primary and revision joint replacements, hand and upper limb surgery, spinal surgery (in conjunction with neurosurgery) , as well as day case surgery. The anaesthetic services are mainly provided by consultant and staff grade anaesthetists.

Anaesthesia for orthopaedic surgery in East Yorkshire is carried out using a variety of techniques general anaesthesia, local and regional (central and peripheral nerve), or combinations of these. The support of well developed Acute Pain Services at both sites allows the continuation of intra operative analgesic techniques to be continued into the post operative period.

Trainees are exposed to anaesthesia for orthopaedic surgery throughout their training, gain experience in anaesthesia for patients of all ages, and are taught a wide variety of techniques. There are tutorials in the subject as part of their regular teaching syllabus, and the department has multimedia teaching aids to supplement practical tuition.
